Dark Circles

6 Jan

Shadows under your eyes can be the result of several factors: allergies, irritation, dehydration, fatigue, nasal congestion, sun exposure, or thinning skin. The skin under the eyes is already thin to begin with (about half a millimeter thick), so the veins below the surface can show through and create a blue cast. If you have deep-set eyes or very fair skin, the effect is even more pronounced. If you have a dark skin tone, the pigment can also collect under your eyes to create circles.

To address pigmentation issues, look for an eye cream containing licorice and hyaluronic acid. Studies show that these ingredients reduce dark circles after six weeks of use. Retinols may help those with thinning skin.

For a quick home remedy, soak cotton balls in cold soy milk. The coolness and the anti-inflammatory properties of soy can help reduce irritation and puffiness. Also, try adding a pillow at night. Elevating your head during sleep can help prevent fluids from collecting under your eyes.

You can also cover up the problem with concealer. Look for a product that’s a shade lighter than your foundation and with a creamy, thicker consistency. Apply the concealer in light, feathery strokes using a makeup sponge or a flat makeup brush.

The Way We Are

4 Jan

We look through the glossy pages of the top fashion and style magazines.  The celebrities and models are gorgeous.  We tell ourselves that if we looked like that we would have a fabulous life.  If we were thinner, prettier, if our butt wasn’t so big (or so small), if we had hair like that, if our skin were that clear. But have you thought about what goes into making those models and celebrities “Models and Celebrities” ?  We sometimes get a glimpse of the real side of their lives. Looks are not everything – yes we hear that all the time, but it really isn’t.  Here are some looks at our beauties as they really are. I want the lighting, the wind machine, the professional make up artist, the person that does the air brushing, I want them in my home every morning when I wake up. But since that isn’t the real world, I’ll take my mousey brown hair, my sparse eyebrows, my ruddy check color and my little-to-large breasts into my own bathroom and make the most of what I have.  We may not be a dream girl, but I guarantee you that we are the dream of someone that loves us just the way we are.

Picture Perfect

26 Dec

New Year’s Eve is right around the corner and with that comes the taking of the photos.  Don’t be intimidated, you don’t have to look perfect to take a perfect picture. Here are a few tips to help make solving photo issues a snap.

Less Posing – If your mind is focused on something other than the photo, you’ll appear less rigid. Never keep your hands right by your sides, clasp them in the front or in the back, or hold on to a glass or your eyeglasses to help relax your body.

Fake Flawless Skin – Get as much light on your face as possible. Use a flash inside and outside because the light of the flash will bounce off the skin, illuminate it, and conceal facial imperfections.

Lose the Double Chin -Project your chin out an inch or so more than you normally would. You may feel a bit awkward, like a giraffe, but you’ll have a long, thin neck in the photo.

Keep Your Eyes Open – Close your eyes and have the photographer count to three. On three, open them. Works every time.

Lose the Deer-in-the-Headlights Look -Don’t look straight into the lens. Focus your eyes just above the lens instead of staring directly into the camera.

Using any or all of the tips will ensure this year’s photos are picture perfect !

Interview with Eklectic Xplosion Vintage

17 Dec

Chanel and I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Qiana, the Owner and resident fashionista of the Eklectic Xplosion Vintage shop. We had the opportunity to ask Qiana a few questions about her and her business.

*First Qiana, let me thank you taking the time to speak with us today.  Can you tell us a little about yourself ?

EK:  I’m just a simple girl that loves her dog, and her Vintage! Lol. I’ve been intrigued with Fashion ever since I can remember. With an emphasis on Vintage. The feeling of knowing what I bought was original, and totally broken in made me a happy girl.

*Your online shop, please, tell us a little more.

EX:  The styles I sell on my site are rare, odd, and eclectic. They Ooze originality, and all are One-Of-A-Kind. No duplicates in my shop. Pieces that can be paired with Modern styles as well. Just all around classic Gently worn Vintage.

*Was it difficult to put together an online shop ?

EX:  I wouldnt say it was easy or hard. I am passionate about it, so it comes easy to me. Of course at times certain sides are challenging, but I like a challenge. Nothing worth while is easy.

*What are the future plans for your site ?

EX:  Stay Tuned (laugh)

*When did you realized you wanted to be in fashion ?

EX:  I would always get compliments on my handbags, glasses, etc. knowing I had an eye for it,  I thought why not share it. Everyone wants to be Fab, but everyone may not have the same budget. I wanted to offer high end Vintage for all. Affordable one of a kind pieces that all could rock and be Haute!

*The word fashion means different things to different people, what does fashion mean to you ?

EX:  Fashion means knowing how to turn nothing into something! Its not how much you spend on and item. Its how you put it together! A fab belt or a mean pair of frames can bring ANYthing together! Knowing how to rock what you got!

*Do you have any favorite designers ?

EX:  Betsey Johnson, and my new-new Mundo!!

*Any advice on wearing vintage ?

EX:  You can mix and match with Vintage! You dont have to overdose on it! A nice pair of Sunglasses or even a chic little clutch mixed with your trendy looks will work as well! Play with it a little. See what works best for you.

*Anything you want to share ?

EX:  But of course! (Laugh)  You can see more of my items at www.eklecticxplosion.com Follow me on Twitter for special promotions at www.twitter.com/eklecticx  and Oh, sign up for mailings at www.eklecticxplosion.com

Kyan Douglas’ Tips For Winter Hair

16 Dec

From frizzies to fly-aways, as the temperature drops we’re faced with a slew of new hair challenges — and taking care of your locks during the winter goes way beyond deep conditioning.

  • “Great looking hair starts with a great cut, and it ensures your hair looks its best during the winter months, ” says beauty expert Kyan Douglas. Plus, when you get a good cut, it requires less heat and product styling, which means less damage to the hair.
  • If you can get away with it, shampoo less. “Over shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils,” says Douglas, and those natural oils are what keep the scalpand your hairhealthy. If you have hair that needs to be washed daily, try a sulfate-free shampoo. They’re less drying and irritating to the scalp, which is particularly important in the dead of winter.
  • If you’re completely hooked on hair gel, which has a greater tendency to flake and dry the hair out in cold weather, Douglas suggests mixing your own product cocktail: one part favorite hair gel to one part moisturizing styling product.
  • Hair Gloss is the equivalent of smoothing the skin with a touch of shimmer; a hair gloss instantly adds luster to lifeless locks. According to White, glosses add richness and radiance to the hair, as well as luminosity to the complexion. “Using a gloss adds warmth to your hair color, which brings out the warmth in your skin. It works in much the same way as a certain color clothing can pop your skin tone.”
